What kind of scooter are you deploying?

Wind Mobility will replace its current model with the advanced new LINK e-scooter from transportation robotics and shared mobility company, Superpedestrian. The new LINK e-scooters introduce sophisticated safety technologies, such as onboard storage of city maps and geofence commands, and Superpedestrian’s patented Vehicle Intelligence self-diagnostic system.

Why are you deploying a new scooter?

The upgrade allows Nottingham and Derby to provide their 500,000+ residents with the latest advancements in safety and sustainability. The new WIND LINK e-scooters introduce sophisticated safety technologies, such as onboard storage of city maps and geofence commands, and Superpedestrian’s patented Vehicle Intelligence self-diagnostic system.

What do I need to do to use the new e-scooters?

The current Wind app on your mobile device will stop working on November 17. Enjoy the new LINK e-scooters starting on December 15 by following the few easy steps below: 

  1. Download the LINK app

  2. Set up a method of payment and start riding our new LINK scooters

What are the requirements to sign up for the LINK app?

Everyone 18 years or older with a provisional or full driving licence can download the LINK app and create a user account.

Why have you raised the minimum age requirement to 18? 

The minimum age limit has been raised to 18 years, to bring Nottingham and Derby into line with other major UK cities, such as London. 

I am not yet 18 years old. Can I sign up for a user account in the LINK app?

Do I also need a driving licence for the new e-scooters?

Yes, the Department for Transport requires all e-scooter users to have a provisional or full driving licence.

Do I have to register with LINK or will my user account be transferred?

The current Wind app on your mobile device will stop working on December 17. To enjoy the new e-scooters, you will need to download the LINK app and set up a new user account.

What happens with the credit in my Wind wallet? 

Your balance will be automatically refunded to you.

What happens to my current Wind account?

Since the WIND app is being deactivated, please use the new LINK account to use the new LINK e-scooter

What about my personal data?

You do need to sign up through the LINK app if you want to continue to use scooters in Nottingham. Users will be required to review and sign up to the Superpedestrian privacy policy once they download the LINK app. The way Superpedestrian handles its data is set out in its privacy policy.

Will the entire Wind fleet be swapped on the same day? 

Yes, the local Wind team will collect all yellow Wind scooters overnight and the new LINK co-branded e-scooters will be available to use the next day.

Why are the new scooters not equipped with helmets?

The first year of the trial showed that Wind’s integrated helmets were used for only 4% of all rides in Nottingham. In addition, helmets will not be supplied in response to concerns around hygiene and sanitisation in light of Covid-19. However, Superpedestrian has committed to supplying 1,000 personal helmets to riders upon requests and will distribute helmets during safety events.

How will Superpedestrian ensure that scooters are ridden responsibly and parked correctly?

The 3-strike system whereby a user can be warned, suspended and ultimately banned if they are reported to us for irresponsible riding or wrong parking will remain in place. Additionally Superpedestrian has industry leading geofencing and positioning technology to support safe and accurate parking.

What are you doing to protect vulnerable groups such as blind and visually impaired people?

Superpedestrian will continue to engage regularly with advocacy groups for blind and visually impaired people as well as other vulnerable groups to ensure their needs are considered and addressed. Superpedestrian will deploy parking racks that have been approved by RNIB in a number of key locations around Nottingham to help with safe and tidy parking that will not impede vulnerable pedestrians. 

I don’t want to use the new scooters. Do I have to ask for the deletion of my account? 

Please contact customer service at support@link.city, or by calling us at +44 808 169 9270 to delete your WIND account. [RS2] [FE3] If you don’t plan to use the new LINK scooter, there is no need to create a new LINK account.

Will the switch also affect subscription users?

Yes, if you are a key worker and have a monthly subscription scooter, our customer service team will get in touch with you over the next few days to arrange for the scooter swap. The new scooter will be delivered to your home along with a training manual.

How many of the new scooters are you deploying?

The fleet size remains unchanged. There will be a total of 750 e-scooters on the streets of Nottingham. Further LINK scooters will be provided to key workers signed up to Wind’s innovative personal subscription programme running in both Nottingham and Derby.

Are the new scooters as safe as the Wind scooters?

Yes! The new e-scooters have a number of advanced safety features, such a predictive maintenance system that reduces repairs, cuts waste, extends service life and increases fleet availability. The vehicles also have robust tires and chassis, and the footboard is wider than the industry average to ensure a more stable and secure ride. 

Do I have to verify my age and identity again and upload my driving licence?

Yes, users will need to upload an ID and have it verified to sign up to the LINK app.

Who is servicing the new scooters?

The current Wind team will continue servicing and maintaining the new e-scooter fleet in Nottingham and Derby. 

What happens to the WIND scooters?

The yellow Wind scooters will be collected by our local operations team and re-deployed to other markets where Wind is currently operating.

Are the new scooters environmentally sustainable? How will the scheme support the council’s carbon neutral targets?

Superpedestrian is certified 100% carbon neutral and designs, engineers and manufactures its own vehicles, allowing the company to minimise CO2 at every stage.
